Justice for Adriana Smith

Why her story should be seen as a cautionary tale for all women.

Adriana Smith, a Black woman from Georgia, died during a medical emergency in February of this past year. Yet, a few weeks ago, doctors were able to deliver her child by removing it from her womb.

Smith was declared brain dead back in February and was pregnant at the time of her death. Yet rather than pull life support from her, the doctors chose to keep her body “alive” to monitor the fetal cardiac activity of her unborn child.

Effectively, they kept Smith “alive” for her womb, which they intended to exploit for science in the name of “saving” her child.

And guess what, this is nothing new…the medical and scientific community have done similar tactics like this before, and what Smith’s case shows us is that there is still a Western bias towards women and their wombs. So much so, we don’t blink an eye when we effectively turn a woman from being human into a host.

This podcast episode follows my thoughts as I attempt to process my own reaction to Smith’s case and what it means for all of us as women in the collective.

My heart goes out to Smith, her family, and her children. May they find some sense of justice in what has happened to her, and I hope the world will remember her story.
